English as a
New Language
at P.S. 205
The mission of the English as a New Language (ENL) program at P.S. 205 is to support language development of the English Language Learners (ELL) in a socially , culturally, and an academically supportive environment.
Once a newly enrolled student enters into P.S. 205 an ENL teacher will determine if the student needs to take an exam called NYSITELL (New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners based on the HLIS (Home Language Identification Survey)and interviews. Results from the NYSITELL will determine your childs' entitlement.
P.S. 205 utilizes the push-in model in which the ENL teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers. Together, they develop strategies and modify lessons to help the students' acquisition of English. English language instruction focuses on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in langauge arts and other content areas. Students work one-on-one with the ESL teacher or in a small group. This type of instruction and model promotes academic success and allows our ELL students to achieve proficiency on the NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test).
In addition to the ESL push-in program provided during the school day, P.S. 205 provides a Title III After-School Program: ELL Academy . During these one hour sessions, teachers implement Award Reading to help increase the students' comprehension of academic language and improve in all for modalities: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
